Hans Zimmer and Lorne Balfe Score Dragon Age: The Veilguard

Hans Zimmer Unveils Main Theme for Dragon Age: The Veilguard

Renowned composer Hans Zimmer dropped a major surprise this fall by unveiling the main theme of Dragon Age: The Veilguard on his official YouTube channel. As of today, this highly anticipated track is available on all major music streaming services. A recent news release from BioWare confirmed that Zimmer, along with his frequent collaborator Lorne Balfe, co-composed the entire Veilguard soundtrack.

Zimmer, known for his iconic work on Batman Begins and Dune, teamed up once again with Balfe, whose notable credits include Assassin’s Creed: Revelations and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. The duo has worked together on several projects before, including the popular Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 soundtrack. However, this marks Zimmer’s return to video game music composition since his work on FIFA 19 back in 2018.

A Powerful and Emotional Theme

The main theme of Dragon Age: The Veilguard is dark, intense, and melodic. Though it may remind some of menu music, its repeating melody adapts smoothly to various instrumental arrangements and shifts between major and minor keys. This flexibility is crucial for setting the tone during key emotional moments in the game. It’s clear from the initial notes that this theme will play a pivotal role in tugging at the heartstrings of players throughout the storyline.

“A truly flexible theme, it’s built to evolve and resonate with players in a myriad of ways, from opening sequences to climactic battles.” – BioWare press release

Interestingly, this isn’t the first piece from Zimmer and Balfe’s work on Veilguard to reach fans. Earlier this year, in May, BioWare released a box set titled Dragon Age Selections From the Video Game Soundtrack. This collection of four vinyl records featured music from past Dragon Age games, including a hidden gem from Zimmer and Balfe – “D’read Koda”. This haunting track, credited to the duo, closed the album and is believed to reference Dreadwolf, the working title for Veilguard at the time.

Soundtrack Pre-order Details

Fans eager to dive deeper into the world of The Veilguard can look forward to the official soundtrack release. BioWare has announced that pre-orders for the full Veilguard album will begin on October 18 on platforms like iTunes and Amazon Music. The complete soundtrack will officially drop on November 1, just one day after the game’s launch on October 31.

This exciting collaboration between Zimmer and Balfe sets the stage for what’s expected to be an unforgettable Dragon Age entry, blending atmospheric music with immersive gameplay.
